Jazz project week 'The Dutch Scene'

Throughout the year, our students get regular masterclasses from guest lecturers from the international Jazz scene. During this edition of the annual project week we chose a different focus. ‘The Dutch scene’ was dedicated to artists, composers and band leaders from the Dutch jazz scene.

Students were divided into eight ensembles and spent a week working on unique and personal compositions by renowned guest lecturers. The lecturers came to Groningen to work with the students on the creative process. We were proud to welcome Tijn Wybenga, Teun Creemers, Oene van Geel, Sun-Mi Hong, Suzan Veneman (alumna PCC), Martin Fondse, Marike van Dijk and Kika Sprangers. Student Mike Hoomoedt: “There were some real gems among the guest lecturers’ songs. I was really impressed, their music opened my eyes to more composition possibilities.”

Under the guidance of both our own lecturers and the guest lecturers, the students made music for a week and received feedback. The intensive guidance from the guest lecturers allowed for questions. Mike: “I learned how to practice in an ensemble and what ideas there are for specific parts.”

During the project week, the students also had the opportunity to make connections with the Dutch professional field. During presentations and Q&A sessions they got to know Mijke Loeven (director Bimhuis), Joey Ruchtie (Spot/Oosterpoort) and John Weijers (ZenneZ Records).
