Christoph Weidmann
Main Subject Teacher Viola
- Person
The passionate soloist, orchestral musician, and teacher Christophe Weidmann has been the Main Subject Teacher Viola at PCC since 2013. As a versatile musician with a particular affinity for contemporary music, the French violist has built a successful international career.
He began his studies at the Conservatory of Metz, graduating with honours in viola, music theory, and chamber music. Christophe continued at the CNSMDP Paris Conservatory and refined his playing at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Since 2007, he has served as principal violist of the Noord Nederlands Orkest. In addition to his orchestral and solo career, he is a dedicated chamber musician and a highly sought-after teacher. Het performed and gave masterclasses in Europe, the US, Asia, and North-Africa. His love for contemporary music led, among other things, to him giving the Dutch premiere of Yusupov’s ‘Viola Concerto’, originally written for Maxim Vengerov. Besides the modern viola, he also plays historical instruments such as the baroque viola, viola d’amore, and quinton. Furthermore, he experiments with the electric (alto) violin.
Christophe has performed as a soloist in all repertoires and brings this experience, as well as that as the section leader in many symphony orchestras across Europe into the classroom. At the NNO, he organizes courses for his students and masterclasses in festival or chamber music settings. Christophe is happy to invite his graduated students to play with the orchestra or offer them internships. He aims to share his love for music and broad musical interests – from Baroque to contemporary – with his students. “I teach solo repertoire and repertoire for auditions and competitions. My goal is for each student to follow their own musical inspiration, to explore their individuality, and to develop their personal qualities and taste, so that they reach their full potential and become a unique musician.”
