- Person
English pianist and pedagogue Barry Green has been one of the leading voices on the European jazz scene for over twenty-five years. He runs his own record label and will release two new albums in 2026.
Barry studied jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he has been Professor of Jazz Piano for twenty years and played a central role in the jazz curriculum. He gives individual lessons and has developed courses such as Style and Lineage, which explores the lineage of the music through listening and discussion, how the history connects to the now and how this relates to the students and their individual styles and approaches. In addition to his work at the Guildhall, where he has been the Faculty Chair of Jazz Pianists since 2025, Barry has been working at the PCC for the past three years. This has led to more musical collaborations between himself, the teaching staff, and guest musicians from the US. In addition to his teaching, he is active as an international performing musician. He has collaborated and recorded with Charles McPherson, Norma Winstone, Mike Clark, Conrad Herwig, and many other leading musicians. With his own projects, he has performed at clubs like Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and festivals throughout Europe, including the London Jazz Festival. He also runs his own record label and will release two new albums in 2026, recorded in New York. Since 2018, he has lived in the Netherlands and is active in the Rotterdam jazz scene. He plays with, among others, Dick de Graaf, winner of the 2022 Edison Jazz Prize.
Barry is, in short, a teacher and musician through and through. "I'm involved in all piano auditions and assessments, I lead an ensemble, and I’ve developed a new course that focuses on the art of accompanying singers. I see teaching as helping students explore their path and understanding that the history of music is connected to their own role in the future of that music."
